How To "Competition Proof" Your
Production Company

(Read This Letter To Learn Why This Is The Only Product In The Industry
With A 10 Times Your Money Back Guarantee!)

Dear Owner/Producer,

I read a quote recently from a guy who seems to know a thing or two about where technology in our industry is headed:

"Millions of people have camcorders and make videos of their kids or their vacations. But to edit video right now, you have to be a professional with expensive equipment. This will change…PC software for editing film and creating special effects will become as commonplace as desktop publishing software. At that point the difference between professionals and amateurs will be one of talent and craft rather than access to tools."
- Bill Gates, The Road Ahead (Penguin Books, 1996)

I agree with Bill here. Technology is moving at a dizzying pace. It does allow you to do a lot more than you used to in a lot less time for a lot less money. From an equipment standpoint, the playing field is leveling out. This is causing competition to increase…..dramatically. But, being a "professional" in our industry have never been about owning equipment. It has always been about creativity, talent, vision, and ability. And being a "truly successful professional" has always been about finding clients who really appreciate what you do and are willing to pay you a premium for it.

Too many people in this business waste their time cold calling prospects, sending our ineffective mailers, creating extremely expensive four color glossy brochures, randomly discounting their services for no reason, running image ads in trade magazines that their customers never read, and "lowballing" bids because business is slow. I don’t believe in any of that. I believe in inexpensive, highly focused marketing that works. How would you like to check your voice mail right now and listen to messages from three "ready-to-go" clients who were eager to talk to you about working for them on your terms and at your price? It can happen.

Can You Relate To This Person?

I once knew a person in our industry who owned a production company and couldn't understand why he constantly felt like he was just scraping by and always competing primarily on price. The reason was pretty simple. He has bills to pay at the end of the month. Payroll, repairs, tapestock, software upgrades, utilities, rent, equipment loans, house mortgage, grocery bills, etc.. These things were not cheap. And he knew that if he didn't have enough work, he was going to be spending a lot of time at the end of the month trying to figure out who wouldn't mind waiting a few extra days (or weeks) to get paid. And he hated doing that. I mean he really hated doing that…with a passion.

So, in order to avoid all the unpleasantries that accompany those little "irregular cash flow" episodes, he got eager about working. Actually, he got very eager about working. Sometimes too eager. In fact, he just might as well have put a sign around his neck that said "Call us! We'll do anything and we’ll do it cheap! We just want to work!" Now, did he come right out and say that? No, of course not. But because of how he communicated with his existing and prospective new customers, this is the real message that he gave out. Clients read the quiet desperation in this approach and negotiated accordingly. So, he and his little production company scraped to get by.

Then, he started getting tired. He remembered a time when all he wanted to do was work because it was so much fun. Now, it was only really fun when was being challenged creatively and getting paid fairly for what he was doing. And that wasn't happening as much as he thought it should. The excitement of being self-employed in a real "sexy" industry like ours started to wear off. Working 70 hours a week and getting paid for 20 (if he was lucky) was something he was now sort of embarrassed about.

He was getting tired of trying to keep up with " the latest and greatest gear" so he could impress his clients (who didn’t really know or care what the stuff was anyway. They just wanted it to look good when it was done.) He was also getting extremely tired of watching competitors land the plum jobs, have a great time producing them and then take two weeks off to "rest" and "beef up the demo reel" after they got paid. He started to get this constant nagging feeling that there just had to be a better way. It just would not go away. He woke up with it everyday.

The person you just read about was me five years ago. But, it could have been almost anyone. As I've traveled the country and talked to hundreds of people in our industry, I've found that we all share the same basic frustration. I've also found that it dosen’t have to be that way… for anyone.

If You Want Better Results, Stop Doing The Things That Don’t Work

After five years of pounding my head up against the wall, something dawned on me. Competing on price in our industry is the losing game. It just dosen't work….ever. Futhermore, being a generalist, or someone who will do anything for anyone who walks in the door leads to mediocrity and internal discontentment. I knew that there had to be a way for me to focus on what I was really good at and what I really enjoyed. And, at the same time, make a lot of more money. Other people that I knew were doing it. So, I knew it was possible.

I started talking to every successful person in our industry that I could find. As I looked around, I saw that the people in our industry who were really successful never, ever competed on price. They had somehow learned how to attract customers who now only understood that quality production was, but also were willing to pay a premium for it. The other interesting thing I learned was that these "truly successful" people said no to a lot of jobs. When I asked them shy, they told me if you're always producing the jobs you don’t want, you never have time to produce the jobs you do want. So saying no is a very important skill to possess.

This scared me. I believed that if I started saying no to jobs, I would quickly revisit the "irregular cash flow" episodes that I hated so much. So I kept asking questions and I learned another very interesting secret. Here it is.

The "Truly Successful People" Are No
More Talented Than Everybody Else

What really makes the "truly successful" people stand out is this: "Truly successful" people in our industry have an uncanny ability to convince customers that they are the best at what they do. Even if thy are aren't. In short, these "truly successful" people understand the magic of good marketing. And because they understand the magic of good marketing, they've got a lot of customers. The kind of customers we all want. The ones that challenge us creatively and reward us financially. It makes sense. If you've got the types of customers you want and they are willing to pay you what you’re worth, then there’s no need to beg for work of "lowball" bids.

The "truly successful" people I met were rarely creative geniuses. They were talented, yes. They gave good service. True. But, so do I and I’m sure you do too. I did learn a few things about these "truly successful" people though. They knew how to present themselves as "the experts" and that let them charge more money for what they did. (It’s pretty hard to compete with "the expert" in your field.) They always got paid for all of the work that they did and they knew how to get the client excited about paying them a premium for their knowledge. They gravitated more toward the work they "wanted" and away from the work they "needed". They had a very clear sense of what was unique about them and their operation and they were exceptionally good at communicated that uniqueness to their customers. But, most importantly…

"Truly Successful" People Understand the Difference
Between Features and Benefits.

The real difference between me and these "truly successful" people was simple. I was always talking about myself….the equipment I owned, my creative abilities, my wonderful staff, the service I gave, the quality of my productions, my service area, my experience, my demo tape etc.. These were the "features" of my business and nobody really have a sh-t about them except me. The "truly successful" people I met talked to their customers about the benefits of what they did. And the benefit is what the customer really cares about. The benefit is why you get hired. This one simple concept changed my life.

Learn To Attract Customers by Focusing on Benefits and Then
Watch 94% of Your Problems Vanish

Eight years ago, when I joined my production company, Edgewood Productions, we were doing $40,000 per year in sales. Most of that revenue came from taping weddings. Our marketing efforts consisted of a small and ineffective Yellow Pages Ad and cold calls to all of the people who announced an engagement in the newspaper. Since the other production companies in our town and in the surrounding areas were doing the exact same thing, what usually happened was that every bride to be would get a call from a least three producers. Then, she would start working us against each other on price. Inevitably, when we got the job, we’d be getting paid a lot less that we wanted. It seemed like I was traveling full speed ahead on a one way street toward permanent mediocrity.

Then, I discovered the marketing secrets I’m going to talk about in this letter. I learned to apply them and, over the next 2 years, my company entered into a phase of phenomenal growth and my life became infinitely easier and more fun.

Today, we do high end corporate work, field shooting for nationally known networks, digital audio and video post production for a variety of exciting clients and low budget feature films. In 1997, sales topped the $1 million mark.

I no longer worry about "cash flow irregularities" and I only take the jobs I want. I get paid for everything I do and I turn down more work than I produce. I feel grateful to have learned how to turn my company and my life around and now I want to share what I’ve learned with people like you.

The Key To Success Is Getting
Qualified Customers To Come To You

Getting the clients you want is a lot easier that you might think. The secret is in transforming your image in the marketplace from just another producer or production company into a highly qualified production specialist. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to do this.

What if you learn a system that would make your production company virtually immune to competition? Wouldn’t it be nice if you were booked over 90% of the time and knew it was going to stay that way? Even though it seems like everyone with a camcorder these days is willing to give away their services for next to nothing just so they can work, you can still guarantee that your investment in this business is safe into the next century. We are offering a seminar in your area that will reveal to you new, creative marketing ideas, designed specifically to give you the edge over your competition.

I’ve spent the last five years and tens of thousands of dollars learning how to do exactly that. I succeeded and so can you. We’ve taken all of the ideas that worked for me and put them into an information, packed career changing one-day seminar. The ideas that we’ll share at the seminar can work for anyone in our industry.

This Taped Seminar Is Not About "Theory".

Everyone who will go through it will finish with A Specific, Written, Plan Of Action.

But, I Understand That You Might Be Skeptical.

When we’ve put this seminar on in the past, people were often skeptical that we could cover all of the things we talk about in this letter in one day. Understandably so. We do cover a lot. You might be skeptical too. But, please keep these things in mind:

1. Everyone who attends our seminars grades us on our performance at the end of the day. Attendees rate the content of the seminar on a scale of 1-10.

Our grade average on content is 9.6 out of 10.

    1. Everyone who attends our seminars rates us as presenters on a scale of 1-10 also. Our grade average on presentation is 9.4 out of 10. (So our material is better that we are. I can live with that.)
    2. The seminar is completely guaranteed. If you don’t think it’s worth ten times what you paid for it. You get your money back. No questions asked. More about that later.

I can’t wait to measure the response to that… Your seminar was truly a life changing experience for Trish and I. We can’t thank you enough for having the vision to share your knowledge and experience."
